In many setups, especially Docker images, PHP-FPM listens on 127.0.0.1:9000; nginx passes PHP requests via fastcgi_pass. Debian/Ubuntu use a Unix socket such as /run/php/php8.3-fpm.sock instead. Portainer, MinIO and SonarQube also like port 9000 – conflicts are common.
Never public. An exposed FastCGI port allows arbitrary PHP execution, e.g. via crafted PHP_VALUE parameters. Localhost or the internal Docker network only.
Typical: 502 Bad Gateway because FPM is down, listens on another port, or has hit pm.max_children (see the FPM log).
